The grafts are placed in a special solution that reduces trauma and increases follicle viability. The procedure is performed from start to finish by trained, certified physicians. No prior incisions or holes are made in the recipient area before implanting the follicle, and because the follicles aren’t dissected under a microscope, the root isn’t damaged.
This keeps handling and time outside the scalp to a minimum, boosting viability.
Full control over direction, angle and depth ensures a natural look and result. All our procedures follow strict safety protocols, and our DHI-designed extraction and implantation tools have a diameter of 1 mm or less. Follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area under strict protocols.
They are sorted by number of hairs and kept at 4–8 °C to preserve their viability.
They are implanted directly with the DHI implanter, with full control of direction, angle and depth.
The first hairs emerge at 3–4 months. The result is seen more fully between 10 and 12 months.
The DHI technique is performed under local anesthesia, so the procedure is usually virtually painless. Anesthesia is applied first to the donor area and then to the recipient area. During the procedure you may feel mild sensations, such as pressure, tingling or itching. After the procedure, moderate tenderness or discomfort is normal for a few days and is usually controlled with the medication prescribed by the physician.
The DHI implanter is a pen-shaped medical instrument designed to place each hair follicle directly into the recipient area. The follicle is loaded into a very fine tip —usually 1 mm or less— and the physician implants it controlling three essential aspects:
• Angle, so the hair follows its natural slope.
• Direction, to integrate it with the existing hair.
• Depth, to protect the follicle and support its growth.
The tool creates the small channel and places the follicle in a single motion, allowing precise implantation, graft by graft. At DHI Panamá, this precision is used to design natural hairlines and keep individual control over each graft.
Recovery from the DHI procedure is usually fast. The donor area normally heals in about 3 to 5 days, while mild redness tends to subside during the first week. Small temporary scabs may appear in the implanted area. Most patients resume light activities within a few days, following medical guidance and avoiding knocks, friction, intense sun and strenuous exercise during the recommended period.

Once the anesthesia takes effect, you usually feel no pain, though you may notice mild sensations such as pressure, tingling or itching. The specific anesthetic medication is determined by the physician based on the clinical evaluation, medical history and any patient allergies.
It isn't always necessary to cut all your hair. In many DHI procedures only the donor area is trimmed to make follicle extraction easier, while the recipient area can keep its long hair. There are also partial-shave or no-visible-shave options in selected cases. The decision depends on the number of follicles needed, hair length and the medical evaluation.
